Cuts and scratches are almost impossible to avoid, and so do scars. We all probably have some dark spots or scars on our bodies. Some are ignorable, but some noticeable ones may be bothersome or look unpleasant. So, is there a way to remove them and make the skin look perfect again?
Why and how does a scar form?
Scarring is a part of the natural healing process. When you have an injury or cut, the body grows new skin cells to heal the wound and fill in any gaps caused by the injury. This collection of cells and collagen covering the injured area is called scar tissue.
Collagen plays vital roles throughout your body, including plumping up your skin and helping your cartilage protect your joints. When a scar develops, collagen fibers repair damage and close any open areas. However, doctors are unsure why scar tissue forms instead of normal tissue.
Scars may appear anywhere on the body and look wildly different. Sometimes, they may also feel painful or itchy. Usually, when a scar forms, it appears pinkish or red, but the color may gradually get darker over time. A scar’s appearance usually depends on the type, size, and severity of the injury and also relates to your age, genes, ethnicity, and overall health.
How to remove scars?
Various methods are available for removing scars, but they may not be successful for everyone. You need to understand the limited effectiveness of these treatments and set reasonable expectations when dealing with scars.
Common treatments for scars include:
Creams, ointments, or gels: Vitamin E, cocoa butter cream, silicone gel, onion extract products, Vaseline, and Aquaphor may be somewhat effective in helping to heal scars.
Laser treatments: Several types of laser and light treatments can make scars less noticeable.
Pressure therapy: Applying pressure with an elastic bandage, dressing, or stocking on a wound during the healing process may help prevent a scar from forming or decrease its actual size.
Surgery: Some surgical procedures can remove a scar, improve its appearance, or transplant skin from another area.
